THLN is a nonprofit organization with nine chapters throughout Texas, including a newly founded South Texas chapter, working for the enactment and enforcement of laws to protect animals from neglect and abuse. The organization works with animal welfare groups throughout Texas to promote the humane treatment of animals through legislation, education, and advocacy. Some of the issues that THLN focuses on include the regulation of puppy mills, animal fighting, companion animal overpopulation, habitat protection and wildlife rehabilitation. THLN monitors proposed legislation that affects animals and animal owners and provides action alerts for members so as to engage their help in working with state legislators. BEHS strives to protect horses and other equine throughout Texas. The organization works with law enforcement officers to investigate reports of neglect, educate owners when possible, seize horses when necessary, rehabilitate them and find them new homes. BEHS receives 200-300 of neglect reports in South Texas each year and has assisted law enforcement in the seizure of horses in several cases.
